Dry skin is the bane of winter. But January is the time to try new things. So…
If you are tired of using skincare products with a long list of ingredients that you’ve never heard of and have no idea what they do, you might want to try making your own. A simple, but luscious four-ingredient lotion for hands, face, and body is an easy place to start — and your skin will thank you!
Equipment you will need: glass canning jar (1 quart), long handled spoon, medium sauce pan, glass container with lid to cool and store lotion in after it is finished cooking.
Luscious Four-Ingredient Lotion
Ingredients:
1/2 cup – almond or olive oil
1/4 cup – coconut oil
1/4 cup – bees wax
2 tablespoons – shea butter (optional)Directions:
Put almond oil, coconut oil, bees wax and shea butter into canning jar.
Stand jar in 3-4 inches of water in medium pot. Bring water to a slow boil then turn down to simmer. Stir every few minutes.
When all ingredients are liquid, turn heat to low and allow lotion to heat an additional 5 minutes. Pour into container (this is hot oil, so be careful).
Refrigerate for at least 48 hours before using so the lotion can set. It turns white as it cools.
Tips:
- I double the above recipe and pour into separate containers. The second one remains in the refrigerator until needed. The lotion has Antimicrobial properties from the bees wax and coconut oil to keep it from spoiling, but shouldn’t be used after 6 months if kept at room temperature.
- If you would like scented lotion, essential oils like jasmine, rose, geranium, chamomile, lavender, or sandalwood can be added during the heating process. Five to ten drops should do the trick. Make sure to stir well.
