Perspectives: Emergency Room Bills

Emergency room bills

Sarah Kliff’s I read 1,182 emergency room bills this year. Here’s what I learned. provides telling insight and shocking, all too real examples, of recent Gallup poll findings that American’s borrowed an estimated $88 billion in the past 12 months to pay for health care, — 45% of U.S. adults are concerned that a major health event could lead to bankruptcy, and — 65 million adults had a health issue but did not seek treatment due to costs in the past 12 months.

  1. I read that piece. It was horrifying. And something like 1/3 of Americans filing for bankruptcy are doing so because of medical bills. We should not have to choose between life-saving medical treatment and paying the mortgage.
