Banff National Park is in the heart of the Canadian Rockies and is Canada’s first national park. It’s destiny was set with the discovery of a natural hot springs by railway workers in 1883. The highest peak, Mount Forbes is 11,850 feet. The mountains range from 45 to 120 million years old.
Within the 2,564 square miles of the park is Banff, the highest town in Canada (elevation of 4,540 feet); Lake Louise, the highest permanent settlement in Canada (elevation of 5,052 feet); Castleguard Caves, the largest cave system in Canada; more than a thousand glaciers; and many glacier-fed lakes such as Lake Louise, Moraine, Bow, and Peyto Lakes.
